Position Title:Lab Technician
Salary Band:  Technician
Work Location & Schedule:Valdez This is a non-exempt position working a one (1) week on / one (1) week off or (2) week on/ (2) week off schedule with a 12-hour work day.  The position will rotate on day and night shifts.  Some overtime will be required as well as the ability to travel.  Alaska residency and Valdez residency are preferred.  Individuals living away from Valdez will be held accountable for reporting to their work location on time, and for reporting as needed for unscheduled overtime.  Not eligible for relocation benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:Applicant must meet or exceed these minimum job requirements to apply for this position.
  • HS Diploma and 12 hours of college chemistry or three (3) years of related laboratory or environmental field work experience
  • Proficiency in use of computers and software including MS Word and MS Excel
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations and test methods to include EPA, ASTM, Standard Methods and ADEC published requirements.
  • Ability to lift at least 35 pounds
  • Position may require the employee to lift 70 pounds on an intermittent basis.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Petroleum Laboratory experience
  • B. S. degree in chemistry or related science
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and lab instrument operation and maintenance
  • Ability to work independently and perform successfully in a team environment
  • Ability to work alone
  • Experience with Alyeska Pipeline Service Company job/work expectations, regulatory requirements, and procedures
Accountabilities & Specific Requirements: Under general direction of the Analytical Laboratories Supervisor, the Laboratory Technician is to provide Laboratory services at the Valdez Marine Terminal.  The successful candidate must be willing to actively support Alyeska’s Code of Conduct, Rules and Regulations, and work place expectations. 
  • Performs routine quality control testing as required by departmental standard laboratory procedures (SLPs) and sampling and analytical schedules
  • Performs various routine physical and chemical analyses on matrices such as incoming crude oil, in accordance with ASTM, API or SLPs
  • Completes chemical and physical testing procedures for a wide variety of samples including potable and non-potable waters, and other related media following SLPs
  • Conducts routine and non-routine sampling of materials to comply with a multitude of permits and regulatory requirements under which Alyeska Pipeline Service Company (APSC) operates
  • Prepares and ships laboratory samples to contracted laboratories
  • Completes Quality Bank sampling, maintains/repairs Quality Bank sampling equipment, ships samples to Quality Bank testing laboratory
  • Calibrates instruments, completes minor repairs, prepares standards, takes inventory, and orders appropriate sampling and laboratory supplies
  • Interacts with appropriate Operations group/s to ensure that sampling and analytical methods will meet the needs for specific project and/or permit
  • Completes training, as established for that position, and as needed for Technician Progression and Training Program
  • Performs laboratory housekeeping
  • Challenge inefficient processes and identify opportunities for improved business effectiveness

 Pre-Employment Drug Screen TestingAlyeska Pipeline Service Company (APSC) requires pre-employment drug testing utilizing hair test collection for all positions. The preferred collection site is from the head (approximately 1/2 inch of hair length necessary).   Head hair testing provides an approximate 90 day window of detection that checks for illegal drug use.  In addition, for Department of Transportation covered positions, APSC will also utilize urinalysis testing. Any positive drug test makes you ineligible for APSC employment.
